- California,
Oregon, and Washington are part of the Pacific Crest Trail
Cheryl
Strayed, the author of the novel and upcoming film Wild, had never backpacked
before when she embarked on the Pacific Crest Trail in southern California,
traveling north towards Oregon. She was a new woman by the time she reached the
Oregon-Washington border, more than 1,000 miles later, having lost blood,
sweat, tears, and toenails along the way. It takes four to six months to hike
the entire PCT.
The
path is also accessible by horses, and the Pacific Crest Bicycle Trail closely
parallels the PCT.
According
to the Pacific Crest Trail Association, most hikers prepare for six to eight
months. Only 200 individuals each year complete the voyage from Mexico to
Canada.
- California's
John Muir Trail
The
John Muir Trail, which runs south across the High Sierras from Yosemite
National Park to Mount Whitney's peak, is a trail-worthy for a wilderness
monarch. Muir dedicated his entire push to preserving natural areas. His
namesake route Flights to India from NYC,
travels along the crest of some of the
country's most magnificent and unspoiled terrain. Most hikers walk north to
south in late summer and take three weeks to complete the journey. There are no
shelters along the path save the John Muir Hut on top of Muir Pass, \ halfway
along. Hikers can buy food in a handful of tiny towns and isolated resorts
along the trail's northern half. Still, a 100-mile wilderness section in the
south requires meticulous meal preparation, including packing 10-plus days'
worth of food into a bear-proof canister.
- New
Mexico's Continental Divide Trail
The
Continental Divide Trail (CDT) should provide you with a Ph.D. in long-distance
hiking logistics if you complete it. There are few resupply sites, and only 70%
of the way has and labeled, making route-finding difficult. Around a half-dozen, individuals try to trek the whole CDT every year, with just a few succeeding.
The journey takes roughly six months on average, with thick snow and summer
lightning posing substantial dangers.
- Yosemite
National Park's Grand Traverse
Yosemite
National Park is known for its vistas and massive sequoia trees, as well as
some of the most fantastic trekking in the world. The Yosemite Grand Traverse,
praised by National Geographic, will take you past waterfalls, lush
mountaintops, and meadows on its strange journey.
- From Georgia to Maine
It
is also the most user-friendly. Because the path Flights
to India from DC through and near multiple cities
and crosses numerous highways, it is often easier to plan a journey than either
the PCT or the CDT. Hiker deals are available at several trail towns and
businesses along the path, including hostels, shuttle services, and restaurants.
There are white blazes on trees, fence posts, bridge towers, and even sidewalks
to help you find the track—more than 250 three-sided sleeping shelters along
the trail to avoid carrying a tent.
- The Bay
of Fires
White
beaches, azure oceans, and orange-toned rock highlight this trek. The air is
pure, and you'll have the opportunity to see nature, animals, and rocky
headlands along the route.
- Vermont's
Long Trail
It
is America's oldest long-distance path. It runs from the Massachusetts state
line to the Canadian border, following the crest of the Green Mountains and
traversing all of its notable summits, including Camel's Hump and Mount
Mansfield, among others. The Green Mountain Club built it in 1930. The Long
Trail, like the AT, has a series of shelters spaced a day apart. Many of the
northern sections of the Appalachian Trail are quieter and more remote than the
rest of the trail. The average hiker takes a month to finish the journey.
- Traverse
Over a Long Distance
This
popular hiking path leads you through a scenic, challenging wilderness trek.
Campsites dot the course to keep you on track, but you'll need some compass and
map navigation skills. Always keep an eye out for animals such as caribou and
moose.
- Arizona and Utah's Hayduke Trail
The
Hayduke Trail, named after one of the heroic characters in Edward Abbey's
classic novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, goes through the strikingly bizarre
desert terrain that inspired the book. It begins at Arches National Park, where
Abbey served as a ranger for three seasons and continues via Canyonlands, Bryce
Canyon, Grand Canyon, and Zion National Parks on a patchwork of public lands.
The Hayduke Trail is challenging for the faint of heart: water is sparse
throughout the route, and route-finding abilities are required to navigate the
sometimes befuddling canyon country environment. Fewer than ten individuals
have trekked the whole path to date, and however, some portions are well-known
among weekend trekkers and day hikers.
